What the Ontario Fire Code requires
Under the Ontario Fire Code (O. Reg. 213/07), portable extinguishers must be inspected monthly (Article 6.2.7.2), and their maintenance and testing must follow NFPA 10 (Article 6.2.7.1). Each extinguisher needs a securely attached tag showing the maintenance or recharge date, the servicing agency and the signature of the person who did the work (Article 6.2.7.4).
Monthly checks and annual service
The monthly inspection is a quick visual check that each extinguisher is in place, visible, charged and undamaged, and your own staff can do it. The annual maintenance, internal examinations and hydrostatic tests that NFPA 10 sets for each extinguisher type need trained service technicians, and that is the work we do.

Questions about fire extinguisher inspection & servicing
How often do fire extinguishers need to be inspected in Ontario?
Monthly. The Ontario Fire Code (Article 6.2.7.2) requires portable extinguishers to be inspected every month, and maintenance and testing must follow NFPA 10, which includes an annual maintenance examination by a service technician.
What has to be on a fire extinguisher service tag?
The Ontario Fire Code (Article 6.2.7.4) requires a securely attached tag showing the maintenance or recharge date, the servicing agency and the signature of the person who performed the service.
What happens if an extinguisher fails inspection?
Extinguishers with defects must be repaired and, if necessary, recharged (Article 6.2.7.3). We repair or recharge it where possible, or replace it, and update the tag and your records.
